Introduction

The ICN Research Report identified two key concepts to understanding and implementing decolonial, anti-racist and feminist approaches to public engagement: power and language.Power is central to decolonial, anti-racist and feminist work. Unequal power relations are enmeshed in political, cultural, and economic systems. Changing unequal power relations in the international cooperation sector is a first step towards addressing structural factors that hinder the use of decolonial, anti-racist and feminist approaches in public engagement. This requires a critical power analysis. In Module 1, we explored language and the importance of context. Different words can have different meanings and it is important to ensure that we are always taking local contexts into consideration. In this module, we will work on understanding the meaning of power dynamics and how they can foster inequity in public engagement spaces if not carefully examined.
